From Head of School
A meaningful life, a purposeful career, a neighborly community, a loving home. What do they have in common? They are all made. Not bought. Not copied. Not scripted. Made -- and the makers are ordinary people who have taken extraordinary initiative to make something happen they believe in.

Schools are like that. Schools are made. No matter how long a school has been around, the spirit of community that supports learning and healthy development has to be re-created by each new class, under the guidance of thoughtful teachers. In the same way, the great discoveries about nature and the human heart have to be made afresh by each and every young person – always with a unique perspective, and sometimes with profound originality. At Vistamar, the adventure at the center of learning will always be our most cherished tradition.

Young people today face complexities their parents can barely imagine, as well as unprecedented competition from abroad. To prepare them, we need to help them reach beyond the borders of their conventional expectations and comfortable lives. We need to introduce them to a world where information is currency and diversity is an asset; where critical thinking and clear communication provide the surest advantages. At the same time, we must give them confidence and compassion.

Higher expectations for performance call for higher levels of connection and personal support. It is through relationships with interested and caring adults that young people come to see themselves as capable and whole. It is by rising to challenges from teachers they trust that students achieve their full potential.

Vistamar graduates will be competitive in the global economy. Just as important, they will feel empowered to help shape a safer and more prosperous world.
