Meet the Admissions Team

Oscar Cancio | Director of Admissions

Oscar joined the Vistamar community in July 2019 and is beyond thrilled to be here. Prior to coming to Vistamar, he was one of the Associate Directors of Admission at his alma mater, Harvard-Westlake School. In that role, he led the office’s Student Ambassadors Program, worked closely with Spanish-speaking families, spearheaded outreach to schools in underserved areas of Los Angeles, and served as the liaison for Community Based Organizations.

Oscar has worked in the Admissions field ever since he graduated from college. Before taking on independent school admissions, he worked in graduate and undergraduate admissions at the University of La Verne, the University of Southern California, and Bates College.

He earned his B.A. in English with a focus on African-American literature from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. In 2016, he received a Business Certificate from UCLA Extension.

During his personal time, Oscar can be found playing ice hockey at the Toyota Sports Center, boxing, spending time with his nephews, volunteering in Long Beach or rooting for his Boys in Blue at Dodger Stadium.

Tisa Habas | Assistant Director of Admissions

Tisa joins Vistamar this year as Assistant Director of Admissions. She is well-versed in working with Los Angeles area students, with prior admissions experience at Wildwood School and at Mirman School. Tisa holds a BA in English from Virginia Tech and an MA in Literature from George Mason University.  She enjoys spending time with her family, practicing yoga, taking long walks with her dogs Ollie and Arrow (while listening to podcasts) and is a voracious reader.  She has been an independent school parent for the past fourteen years and has long admired Vistamar School from afar and is thrilled to be part of the admissions team.  Go Vikings!

Yordana Ortega | Admissions Associate

Yordana joined the Admissions team in July 2021. Before moving to California, Yordana was a youth specialist in Queens, New York, where she supported students and their families in a variety of roles as they transitioned to mainstream education. Since then, Yordana has worked on the administrative team at Morningside High School and Pepperdine University.
Yordana’s commitment to advocacy and helping students grow into their best selves  is a perfect fit for her role at Vistamar School, where she can support students and families as they plan for the future.
She earned her B.A. in Criminal Justice and Psychology in 2014 from Adelphi University and then went on to earn her M.A. in Social Entrepreneurship and Change from Pepperdine University.

During her personal time, you can find Yordana at the beach, reading a book, searching for cool coffee shops, running, or trying a new recipe.

Vistamar School is a private independent high school in the South Bay region of Los Angeles.
