The Mock Trial Team Takes Their First Win

Mock Trial won their first trial of the year!
On Monday evening in downtown LA, the Vistamar Mock Trial team won its first competition of the season. The defense team, admirably led by student-attorneys Gavin E. ('20), Daisy D. ('19), Jackson M. ('21), and Doratea C. ('19), won the verdict in the case in People v. Klein and outscored Pomona Senior High School 270 to 246. The fictional Reagan Klein was charged with two criminal counts: making a criminal threat and making a false emergency call that would likely result in injury (a.k.a. SWATing).

Freshman Katie C. excelled in her role as the defendent, especially when the opposing team from Pomona Senior High School cross-examined her on the stand. Freshman Nolan G., sophomore Zoe G., and junior Justin C. also performed well as witnesses for the defense. Sophomore Andy Z. confidently played the court's baliff. At the conclusion of the trial, the judge acquitted the defendent on both counts to the satisfaction of the Vistamar team. The scoring, which ultimately determines the winner of the competition, was based on the combine individual student performances in their respective roles.

Faculty advisors Mr. David Pham and Ms. Lisa Gumina are proud of the team's growth over the course of the past two months and its performance on Monday. The team was greatly assisted by attorney-coaches, Tom Crunk and Sandi Levin, both of whom are also Vistamar parents.

The prosecution team will compete next Tuesday evening. The attorneys are Sabrina C., Allie H., Shelby M., and Olivia S.. Witnesses are Audrey B., Matthew S., Sofia C., and Laila V. while Dede C. will play the court clerk and official timer.

Vistamar School is a private independent high school in the South Bay region of Los Angeles
