Vistamar's Mock Trial Team finished their season with a strong performance by the prosecution team and barely missed advancing to the next round of competition.
On Tuesday night in Downtown L.A., the Vistamar Mock Trial Team finished their season with a strong performance by the prosecution team and barely missed advancing to the next round of competition. While the team scored 279 points, the opposing team from Diamond Bar High School outscored them by just 7 points with a 286. In this evenly matched round, Sabrina C. ('19) commenced the competition in a pre-trial motion. After winning the motion for the prosecution team, the trial portion proceeded; attorneys Shelby M. ('19), Olivia S. ('21), and Allie H. ('19) presented their case that fictional defendent Reagan Klein was guilty of committing one count of making a criminal threat and one count of making a false emergency call that would lead to bodily harm, also known as SWATing.
The team was supported by strong performances by its four witnesses, played by Matthew S. ('21), Sofia C. ('20), Laila V. ('21), and Audrey B. ('21). The court clerk and official timer was played by Dede C. ('21). Sofia withstood an aggressive cross-examination by the defense and earned an excellent rating by the scorers. Shelby also received an excellent rating for her strong opening statement. In the end, the judge ruled guilty on count one of criminal threat while acquitting the defendent on count two of SWATing due to reasonable doubt.
While the season has ended for the Mock Trial Team with a close and heartbreaking loss, the team feels proud of its growth and acheivement in only its 2nd year of competition after a period of inactive status. Nothing else in high school matches the experience of learning the criminal justice system like mock trial. The team greatly appreciates the time and immense effort of attorney coaches, Sandi Levin and Tom Crunk, in teaching the students about law and procedure. Faculty advisors and coaches--Mr. David Pham, Ms. Lisa Gumina, and Mr. Courtney Federle--are looking forward to growing the program even further and improving the educational and competitive experience for Vistamar students.
