  • Q: Head Search Process Overview

The Search Committee will launch a national search for our next Head of School, and will interview a wide and varied pool of candidates.
From this pool of candidates, the Search Committee expects to identify three to four finalists who will return to Vistamar in early September to meet with members of our community.
As part of the process, the Search Committee and our consultant, Marcus Hurlbut, from Educators’ Collaborative will conduct extensive reference checks on each of the finalists.
After reviewing all the information from the reference checks as well as incorporating feedback from our broader community, the Search Committee will make its recommendation for the new Head of School to the Board of Trustees.
The new Head of School is expected to start July 1, 2018.

  • Q: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I participate in the Search Process?
Parents, students, and alumni will be invited to meet our Head of School finalists when they come to campus. Information about the schedule will be posted in early September.
What is the role of the Search Committee?
The Search Committee directs the search process from start to finish. They will coordinate input from Vistamar’s varied constituencies, work with the search firm to develop the Position Description, sort through the initial round of candidates vetted by the search firm, and organize and conduct interviews with the semifinalists and finalists. At the end of the process, the Search Committee will present one broadly supported candidate to be confirmed by the Board of Trustees. A major function of the Search Committee is to keep the Vistamar community informed and engaged throughout the search process, while respecting the confidentiality of the candidate recruitment process.
    Who is the search consultant?
The Search Committee has retained Educators’ Collaborative, a national search and placement firm that focuses on independent schools. For more information about Educators’ Collaborative, please visit: www.educatorscollaborative.com/
The Search Committee will be working with Marcus D. Hurlbut. Marc has worked in the independent school world for over forty years. He began his career in boarding schools before moving on to Roxbury Latin School in Boston as Dean of Students. He went on to head three schools over the next thirty years – The Derryfield School (NH), Friends Academy (NY) and St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, California. He founded a local chapter of the national Breakthrough Collaborative in all three schools.
Marc holds a B. A. in Political Science from Union College and an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Dartmouth College. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Independent School Association of Northern New England, and the California Association of Independent Schools where he sat on the Board of Standards for four years. He is a member of the Country Day Headmaster’s Association and the Headmasters Association, serving as president in 2001. Marc has chaired more than twenty accreditation teams.
Since joining Educators’ Collaborative in July 2013, Marc has led eight head of school and senior administrative searches, and assisted schools with strategic planning, board and leadership team development, and mentoring of new heads.
What is Dr. Eshoo’s role in the search process?
Dr. Eshoo will remain Head of School until June 30, 2018. Throughout that time, she will continue to lead Vistamar and focus on the goals of our current strategic plan. Karen is committed to ensuring that the school is firmly on the path to successfully completing the Creative Commons capital campaign construction project. While she will serve as a resource to the Search Committee, the Board, and the consultants, she will have no input in the Search Committee’s decisions. She will meet with each finalist when he/she visits Vistamar to share her insight about programs and culture here. Once the new Head of School has been named, Karen will work closely with that person throughout the transition process.
What is the role of our faculty and staff?
In addition to the members of our faculty and staff who serve on the Search Committee, other members of our faculty and staff will be actively engaged throughout the search by meeting semifinalist and finalist candidates.
Can I nominate a candidate for the Head of School position?
Yes! You can contact a Search Committee member directly or via email at headsearch@vistamarschool.org. You may also reach out to our consultant, Marc Hurlbut at mhurlbut@educatorscollaborative.com. The Search Committee is committed to respecting the confidentiality of the candidate recruitment process.
