Boys Basketball

This winter Vistamar’s boys varsity basketball team went 19-3 (5-1 league) and secured a spot in the CIFSS Division 5A playoffs. The Vikings were ranked as high as No. 2 in the CIFSS Division 5A rankings and ended at No. 3. Under Coach Polett, Vistamar rolled off nine in a row before suffering its first loss of the season to Chadwick, 62-38. During that nine game stretch, the Vikings outscored their opponents 522-307 and had a great 42-41 win over Pilgrim School (ranked in the top 10 at the time).

After suffering their second loss on the year, a 41-40 defeat to New Roads, the Vikings went on an eight game winning streak. That came to an end at the hands of league rival, Rolling Hills Prep 67-20. With the loss, Vistamar ended up finishing second in the Coastal League this year.  The boys bounced back by winning a thrilling season finale over Animo Robison, 53-52.

Vistamar will host a first round playoff game against Victor Valley Christian on February 8. Game will begin at 6:00 p.m, at Dana Middle School.

The JV boys team welcomed a new coach to lead them this winter, Michael Archuletta. Under the direction of Coach Archuletta the Vikings saw great improvement both individually and collectively. While it did not necessarily show with the final record (4-11) the team played well together.

Notable opponents included two games with both Chadwick and Mary Star.

Girls Basketball

The girls welcomed a new coach this year, Frank Morizawa, who served as an assistant last year. The team also saw Sheila Johnson as the team’s new assistant coach. Coach J, played Division 1 college basketball at UMBC.

The Vikings season was streaky as they had two three game winning streaks and one four game losing streak. They had some great wins over Bright Star, New Roads and Lennox Academy.

With a final record of 7-8, the girls fell one game shy of making the playoffs and finished fifth in the Coastal League.

Girls Soccer

The girls’ varsity soccer team posted a ten win season this year, a second place finish in the Coastal League and a trip to the CIFSS playoffs. The girls played a solid schedule that included wins over Mary Star, Rolling Hills Prep and CAMS. The girls also saw a seven game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) heading into the playoffs.

The team also welcomed two freshmen, Keira S., and Ryan F., along with Claire P., who transferred from Chadwick. Overall it was a solid season for the Vikings as they look for a strong playoff push this year. They will travel to take on Calvary Murrieta Wednesday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. for the first round of the CIFSS Tournament.

Vistamar also fielded a JV girls soccer team. They were able to play four games this year. Opponents included Mary Star, El Segundo and Lawndale. Even though they didn’t win a game on the year, they competed, improved and grew together as a team.

Boys Soccer

The varsity squad finished 4-4-5 this year. They had tough non-league losses against Mary Star (0-7) and Serra (2-3), but a great non-league win over St. Bernard (3-1). They ended the year with a three game unbeaten streak going 1-0-2 during that time. Unfortunately, the boys fell just short of a playoff berth.

The JV boys welcomed two new coaches this year, Alex Tauber and his brother Benji. The coaches saw great improvement on the year and helped guide the boys to a 4-1 record. The biggest win of the year came against Hawthorne, 8-2.
